A CASE OF A REALLY LARGE DISC HERNIATION

Joey Furuto (name used with his permission) is a supervisor for the City/County of San Francisco.  Bright, bubbly, energetic, he found that his life was getting progressively more difficult and unhappy.  His back pain was getting worse and worse, and he finally got an MRI.  Here is the important part of his report (translated from "medical-ese"  into English.

"At L4/L5, the disc herniation is 16 mm from top to bottom and 9 mm from front to back. The spinal hole on the left where the nerve comes out is completely blocked. The disc is touching and pushing on the left nerve root".  No wonder he had severe pain down his left leg (also known as left sciatica)!!

His presenting complaints included: unable to bend over at the waist, unable to to twist with severe pain  (making driving his car VERY difficult), and constant severe pain down his left leg.

I am a 42-year-old, male, Police Officer who retired in 2010 due to a back injury and failed spinal surgery in 2007.  I had lost all hope of a complete and fulfilling life, other then being on pain medications and having spinal injections, and did want to have another risky invasive surgery.
